Maintaining healthy hair for men is important for a variety of reasons. Not only does a healthy head of hair promote a positive and confident self-image, but it also signals a person's health. Proper care can prevent problems such as breakage, dryness, and hair loss. Hair care is important, and a healthy scalp is vital for hair growth. At Carve Your Path, our men's products have been specifically curated by an industry professional with hair care in mind.
Types of Hair and Care
Whether hair is straight, curly, coiled, or wavy hair, there are plenty of choices in products that promote good health, from shampoos and conditioners to pomades and combs.
Whatever the hair type, it is important to choose the products that will be most beneficial to hair and scalp health.
Straight Hair
For men with straight hair, several helpful tips can be added to a hair care regimen. A good place to start is washing hair every couple of days using lightweight shampoo. Also, include regular use of a good conditioner. After washing, pat hair dry gently rather than briskly.
Although frequent brushing may seem beneficial, it’s best to keep it simple and avoid overdoing it. Also avoid putting oil based products at the root–focus application on the ends–as straight hair does tend to get oily more quickly than other hair types. To help combat oils between washes, a texture powder or dry shampoo can be used. For more detailed styling, a pomade can be used starting with light application at the root and spread along the hair shaft. For a full and healthy look, incorporate styling products that promote volume and texture.
Several of our products are great options for straight hair care and styling, such as Surface Awaken conditioner, Dash For Him pomade, Surface Awaken shampoo, and our Ox the Barber wide tooth powder.
Curly Hair Tips
Like straight hair, it’s best not to wash curly hair everyday to allow the scalp’s natural, nourishing oils to travel down the hair strands. Those with curly hair may have an easier time extending washes as oil doesn’t travel as quickly or easily down their hair strand. Use a gentle shampoo specifically formulated for curly hair. Regular conditioning is a vital part of a curly hair routine as it can often become dry and/or frizzy. A wide-tooth comb works well to detangle hair during or after conditioning while it is still wet. The more curly hair is brushed, particularly after drying, the more frizz will develop–a curl cream will help define curls while preventing frizz.
Our products for wavy hair include Surface Awaken shampoo and conditioner, Highland Glacial Cream, Ox the Barber wide tooth comb, and Davines Love curl cream.
Coiled Hair Tips
While similar to curly hair, coiled hair is at the greatest risk of drying out. Infrequent washes, Using a gentle shampoo and focusing on a deep moisturizing conditioner will keep coils healthy. Before washing, always use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle hair.. After washing, Consider hairstyles specific to coils, such as braids or twists, to keep coils protected. Have a professional Trim split ends frequently to prevent hair breakage.
Our products that work well with coiled hair include Dash For Him strong-hold pomade, Surface Awaken conditioner, curl creams, and a wide-tooth comb.
Wavy Hair Tips
Individuals with wavy hair may benefit from leaning towards the advice for straight or curly hair depending on how loose or tight the wave. If trying to extend the time between washes, using a leave-in conditioner will enhance moisture and a pomade will reduce and prevent frizzy hair. Carve Your Path carries the Ox the Barber wide-tooth comb for detangling, and the clay pomade for enhancing wave reducing frizz.
Universal Truths
Washing hair daily may strip the scalp and hair of beneficial natural oils. If it is necessary to wash hair daily because of particularly oily hair or dirt/debris due to lifestyle or occupation, consider washing with cooler water as hot water will have a stripping effect. Additionally, be sure to condition or use a leave-in conditioner to add back moisture.
If using a heating element for styling, limit the time, as too much heat dries the hair and causes it to become brittle and break. Always use a product that helps protect against hair damage when relying on heat for styling, and finish with a small amount of hair oil to seal in moisture to the strand.
It is important to visit a hair professional for regular trimmings and/or hair cuts to prevent split ends. Professional tools such as shears and clippers are much sharper than at home scissors which risk damaging hair ends, leading to further damage.
